Research at the Chair of Fluid Mechanics and Aerodynamics is divided into three topical areas:
For these activities a large number of experimental facilities are available. The aircraft are used to study in-flight transition phenomena and free air turbulence. Further aerodynamic topics include high-lift configurations, turbulence modeling, semi-span testing techniques and wake survey techniques. Studies in interfacial phenomena concentrate on atomization and spray processes. One main research area involves the theoretical and experimental study of the impact of drops and sprays onto walls and films. Another looks numerically and experimentally at the evaporation of multi-component and multi-phase droplets. The design, construction and calibration of internal wind tunnel balances is a major service offered at the chair of Fluid Mechanics and Aerodynamics for wind tunnel operators. Furthermore a well-equipped optics laboratory is used for new developments in the area of optical measuring techniques, in particular related to the phase Doppler technique. | ||||||||
